Our School Founded in 1994, the International School of Tianjin (IST) is a non-profit, college-preparatory day school for Nursery to 12th grade students of the international community in Tianjin, a major industrial and commercial center in Northern China. IST is fully accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the USA and the Council of International Schools (CIS) in Europe. The school is an IB World School authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12), the Middle Years Programme (Grades 6-10), and the Primary Years Programme (Grades NPK-5). The school year begins and ends in early August and June respectively, and is divided into two semesters, with 180 student contact days in total. There are eight, 40-minute class periods per day with double periods in most academic subject areas. IST graduated its first class in 2005, with graduates thus far having been admitted to over 150 of the worlds most prestigious universities, including Brown, Berkeley, Cambridge, Cornell, Hong Kong UST, Kyoto, Melbourne, Seoul National,Toronto, and Yonsei. Our Community IST currently enrolls approximately 420 students from 26 different countries and regions, with German, French, Danish, Ethnic Chinese, American and Korean students making up the largest percentages. English is the schools common social language and principal language of instruction, with Korean and Mandarin Chinese constituting the next two most prevalent mother tongue languages. Students from 173 foreign invested enterprises currently attend the school, with new students constituting between 20 and 25% of annual enrolment. Our Staff There are 63 full-time and two part-time faculty members, eight of whom are locally hired teachers of Chinese language. ISTs faculty come from 15 different countries with American, Australian, British and Chinese teachers representing the largest percentages. IST teachers typically remain in the school for four years or more with an annual faculty retention rate of approximately 78%. 34 of the current faculty have advanced degrees. The faculty has previously taught at more than 150 different international schools around the world and has an average of 12+ years teaching experience. Teachers are supported by 22 Chinese teaching assistants, all of whom have university degrees. The non-academic administration includes an additional 64 highly qualified local and expatriate support staff.
